October Skies

The last days of September have quickly passed to days of mid-October.

This Robin (and this one as well) has apparently fed well and fattened up for the cold of winter ahead...but, also, like this Robin, seems hesitant to trade one season for another.

The blue is giving over to grey my friend...

The little gathering of hookers at the lake I mentioned in my last post was only a few short days but treasured ones.

{Bald eagle in the sky above}

We ate well, shopped well, slept (mostly) well, laughed well, and, well, some of us hooked well.

Some of us did not.

I was also able to confirm that one very large project could, indeed, finally be crossed off my list. (The "project" was rebuilding the rotted exterior chimney wall, adding window trim and header board, and painting both house and garage.)

The trees seemed confused. Some had lost all their leaves, some were only beginning to change, and some were brilliant.

And some were in full-on spooky mode.

Back in Nod, the trees seem equally out of sorts.

Some have been half-naked for weeks already.

Others are saving their dance cards for other winds (of which we have had plenty the past several days).

The weather has also been untethered - the days caught between seasons and the clouds wandering without conviction. We had several days of gorgeous summer-like temperatures: highs in the low (low) 80's and nights staying in the upper 50's/60's, then a day and night of endless rain, and then a hard, hard, freeze.

My DIL, the girls and I managed to get in a trip to the apple orchard/pumpkin patch once I got back from the lake.
It hadn't yet gotten as warm as the following days would get, but it was still perfect.

After the outing, Little Mia requested an impromptu sleepover at Gigi's and we played poolside in our jammies the following morning.
(That water was some kind of cold.)

As for other "stuff" that some people (not calling anyone out but you know who you are MD), expect to see on my blog, handworks remain sadly stalled.
Both my stitching and hooking mojo are still apparently on an extended walkabout (or scamping about with Betty's.)

Until such time, if ever, (as the good ol' Wizard of Oz would say), as either decide to return home, I'm trying to slowly focus on fully/finally finishing a few long-ago completed projects.

This one is "Salem Village" from Lori Brechlin at Notforgotten Farm.

I finished stitching this piece 6-ish years ago but had truly wanted to have it framed in one of the frames that Lori's husband, Peter, had made for the display model. That wasn't possible so I finally just had it framed in a conventional frame.

This piece will eventually take up residence in a guest bedroom (my son's old room) that has become home to my "Salem" treasures.
As many/most of you know, my great grandmother, 7x removed, Mary Easty (alternatively spelled "Esty" or "Eastey"), was hanged for witchcraft during the Salem witchcraft trials. Many may not know that, at the time, there were actually two "Salems:" Salem "Town" and Salem "Village."  Salem "Town" was a bustling, commercial/merchant port center and is what people now think of as "Salem." Salem "Village" was a small, rural/agrarian farming hamlet about 5 miles inland from Salem Town and was where my grandmother was from. 50+ years after the trials, Salem "Village" was renamed to "Danvers."
(Can't blame them.)

And, because nobody's happy if Mummy D ain't happy, and she's told us she's tired of nature photos and such, here's my progress (term used VERY loosely...since this piece was actually started almost (maybe even over?) a year ago) on my hooking:

{There really are darker rib "lines" in the bottom pumpkin...the photo is very washed out, and the colors are a bit off too. I stopped hooking and photographing after realizing the stem on the bottom pumpkin looks like a wonky crown on the top crow's head. The struggle is real.}

It is called "Crows and Pumpkins" (clever name, no?) and it is a design by Joanne Page of Wooly Worms Rugs.
The best thing about it? That blue background! I had initially chosen a wonderful piece of old paisley for the background but, while beautiful, the blue was too bold and magnetic. So, Cathy (Red Barn Rugs) showed me this piece of wool she had recently dyed to mimic the endless sky/moon photos I take (and she has seen just a small fraction that you have 😂).
She called it "October Sky."
Perfect kismet.

Speaking of October skies, this was last night's quarter moon:

Wishing you all a week filled with full moons, enchantment, wonder...and good kismet.

Oh Robin, where to begin! It's always so nice to get those big projects off of the to-do list...it looks like a perfect getaway. Such fun with your kindred spirits, too...good for the soul. Your trees are farther along than ours...they're beautiful. It's one of my favorite things about fall...all the gorgeous colors. And that little Mia...I LOVE the idea of a sleepover - warms the heart. When the kids were little we camped out under the Christmas tree during December...sweet memories. Beautiful stitching...such patience that I simply don't have. The Crows & Pumpkins blue was meant to be...and I never would have noticed the "crown" - ha, don't fret over it! And that last photo of the moon is stunning.. I really need to get my camera out and stop using my phone so much. Take care of yourself...do something just for "you."

You are always so incredibly sweet with your words and comments my friend. THANK YOU. Yes, it was a relief to get the house battened in before the winter...finally! It was a long time in the doing, trust me. Too long. The colors this year have been hit and miss I think. So many were lost to the winds before they even turned and those that were left seemed to have forgotten to attend dance practice...their synchronization was totally off. The yellows and oranges have been vibrant enough but the reds seem hesitant to take the stage. Re the stitching...didn't you mention a project you had started and were considering resurrecting? I think you definitely should! Yes, the moon and clouds were playing beautifully last night. And, actually, that photo was taken with my phone...not a camera. Talk about a lack of patience. ;-) Thanks, as always, for the visit! Like you said, I think, were we neighbors, we'd be having many impromptu "chats."

Gorgeous Moon shot, magical! L ove that you finished the Salem stitching. A few years ago, I designed and stitched a sampler with all the names of those in both Massachusetts and Connecticut who perished unjustly at the hands of Puritan religious fanatics. At the bottom I stitched a Willow Tree and Memento Mori tombstone designs. It is my dedication to those who passed.
Your granddaughter is beautiful.

Oh how I would LOVE to see that piece Nancy!!!! Please do share! (My email link is on my sidebar somewhere!) Funny, though...I also stitched a tribute piece that sounds somewhat similar, although it wasn't my own design. I did personalize it a bit though. It is another of those pieces I stitched years ago and recently decided to finally finish. It is currently at the framer but expect it to be back home by the end of the week. I'm excited! Thank you so much for you visits and always kind comments.

Our leaves have been so pretty here in Western ,Mass . But wind and rain will leave us with bare trees too soon. Our temperatures have been up and down too , you just don't know how to dress these days. I am enjoying sweater weather though !

I love your rug! Fun times with grands are best days even if they wear us out.

That Mummy person sure must be a piece of work, and bossy too, LMAO.
Lake house is beautiful and love the color paint you chose. And yes, great to cross items on the list off. Nice you have a room for your Salem, crow and witchy pieces to be displayed where you and guests can enjoy the collection.
The pic with the sprawled out feline was adorable and perfect phrasing.

As soon as I clicked 'publish' realized I'd forgotten to tell you how beautifully hooked your crows and pumpkin rug is and love the colors you chose.

Your lake pictures are always beautiful. Not sure I had ever seen an outside picture of the lake house. So sweet.
Your tree pictures are breathtaking. We are heading 4 hours east in to PA tomorrow in hopes of some good fall color. Not great yet in northern Ohio.
I cannot believe your pool is still open!!!
I never noticed the wonky crow crown (try to say that 5 times)…now I can’t unsee it 🤣🤣🤣
You take better moon pictures than anyone ♥️

Hi Robin, your lake house is so pretty and the perfect place for a getaway with friends. It looks like you had beautiful color on the trees in Nod. Our trees were just getting to peak here but the wind of the last few days took care of them. I feel a little cheated this year but you’re right, it’s been out of sorts. Little Mia is just precious. And, I love your Salem Village stitch. The frame is perfect! For some unknown reason it takes me a long time to get things finished, too. Have a good week! Cherie in WI

Your Salem Village is truly amazing and I have been searching for the chart, which I've managed to find. I am confused though, as the dates on the 2 samplers are different and the lettering is different at the top too, but the frames look identical, so not sure which one is yours, or maybe they are both yours?

I am behind on blogging as I came down with the crud. Your Salem Village piece is wonderful. Peter does make the best frames for Lori. Maybe some day you can do a post on your Salem room displays. Mia is growing up fast...and so very precious. Glad you had fun at the pumpkin farm and pool. Crows and pumpkins. I would not have thought about the stem the way you did until you mentioned it. Now to me it does look like a haphazard crown. Hope you have a great week out there in Nod. Janice

Wow, that moon picture is amazing, almost bewitched...
How Mia has grow since I last saw a picture of her. She must bring you a lot of joy. Unfortunately, they grow up too fast. Time seems to be going at breakneck speed for me anyway.

What a great job on that Salem Village piece. I think the frame fits beautifully and a great job on the house too. I love those windows
My house needs major repairs and I hope to be able to tackle that next year. This fall, my big project was having 4 Mini-split heat pumps installed, now I don't have to worry about not having enough firewood for the winter.

Your crows and pumpkins looks great. So what if one of the crows has a crown. lol. You just have a good imagination. lol.
Take care, hugs.
Julia

I'm not surprised the trees are confused - it's been a strange year for them, but they are looking splendid now.
Your repainted house looks so pretty now. It's good to have that project off your mind.
Until you pointed it out, I had not noticed the crow's 'crown' - I'm sure you will find a way round it.

Your images transport me. I can imagine sleeping blissfully in the Salem guest bedroom. Dreaming on a cloud, bathed in moonlight.

Your home is beautiful and I'm glad you were able to get that project finished. My grands are all grown up so no pumpkin or apple picking but they are still fun as adult/teens. That pic of Mia is beautiful and she's a brave girl for take on the cold pool! Love that sky pic! Our trees will be at peak season soon. Like you, some are still a bit green, or have lost leaves. Still, it's been a beautiful October here. I loved my visit to Salem last year and walking through the witch trial cemetery I thought of you and your family roots. So sad for those women and men. Have a good rest of your week!

Did not notice the crow's crown until mentioned. This is a really really great design and very nicely hooked. Lake house is beautiful as is the view. Hope it's finally working out inside too.
Oh look at that baby girl. I love all your photos but the nature, sky, yard, must be included always!
