Back in the Land of Nod

{The sweetest little collage picture was a perfect gift from Lauren (Rugs and Pugs)}

It's the 20th of July and I feel as though I've been gone - or preparing to be gone or unpacking from being gone - for most of those 20 days.

I spent some time at the lake over the 4th of July holiday.

The days were mostly temperate, but the lake was unsettled and moody.

A few days later, I left for my (now annual?) trip to Country Sampler in Spring Green.

The skies were hazy from the Canadian wildfires but the rich colors of the fields and
hills were vibrant and entrancing all the same.

For those of you for whom the names are unfamiliar, Country Sampler is a destination quilting/stitching shop in Spring Green - a village in southwestern Wisconsin. Although small (1,500-people small),
Spring Green may be recognizable to some as the home of the estate and 800-acre sanctuary of Frank Lloyd Wright, Taliesin.

And Taliesin has a famous (and infamous) history all its own.
While "reincarnated" several times, and steeped in history of many sorts, Taliesin's most unfortunate claim to fame is being the site of the tragic murder of 7 people, including Wright's then-partner, Mamah Borthwick Cheney, and her 2 children in 1914.
A disgruntled servant, Julian Carlton, set fire to the living quarters while Wright was away on business and bludgeoned those who attempted to flee with an axe.
While there has been speculation about the reasons for the attack, no motive has been definitively established.
So much unrest in such peaceful surroundings.

But, as usual, I digress.
The purpose of the trip was stitching...and shopping.

I spent a few days with my sister-in-law and her friends, staying in the rooms above Country Sampler.

For my stitchy pals, here are a few snaps of some of the design models that caught my eye:

{Love the Fraktur folksiness of this one! It is "Fraktur Friends" by Shakespeare's Peddler}

{Another Shakespeare's Peddler design: "Mary Bate 1796." This was just beautiful, and I loved the verse. Hopefully you can enlarge to read it?}

{"Christmas in July" by Plum Street Samplers - top half of pattern only.}

{"Sesquicentennial Alphabet in Blue - 1874" by Thread Milk Design. This pattern may have come home with me. 😉}

Personally, I, of course, got little accomplished stitch-wise. Nothing to really show there. But I did finish the stitching on this before leaving:

"My Country" by La-D-Da.
I'm working on one more small patriotic piece while I mull over finishing options for both, then I think it will be time to move on to a different topic for a while.

All in all, I've decided I'm much better at shopping than stitching.

I hope all has been well in your corners of the world.

What a perfect entry photo!!!!
Lauren showed me that NOD piece she purchased for several weeks ago. Wasn't sure when she'd send it and couldn't wait for you to show it to us. She sure knows her sista.
Love your last stitchery and looking forward to what your option will be to finish it.

You know, I know it rains, but my goodness what a beautiful place you live in and all of the green. It looks like hardly any people. I have read about that murder. Its pretty sad and I bet in 1914 it was in all of the papers. I have wanted to go to that store forever. They offer the best service in the world. I think that would be so much fun. I am glad you are doing some fun things. Then there is that lovely view from your house and the lake. So pretty. I hope you can rest now and have some down time. Thank you so much for sharing.

What a beautiful spot you have! It doesn't seem that busy by you anyway for the 4th of July. How fun you got to stay with your sister in law and shop a stitching store. I cannot cross stitch anymore but I do love that first one.

Well you know that I am beyond jealous that you once again went to the Country Sampler! Not that I would need to buy cross stitch patterns I would never stitch 🤷‍♀️
Happy you had lake time. Such a serene setting. Simply beautiful.
Thanks for the FLWright history lesson on Taliesin. Had not heard of that and what a horrific crime.
Forgot all about that little piece I sent you. Now I am wracking my brain trying to figure out at which show I found it. Oh wait, I do remember!!! I am not totally brain dead 🤣🤣

What a sweet gift Lauren sent to you. That countryside is my cats pajamas. I love every bit of that peaceful serenity and sure do miss being on my grandparents farms. Country Sampler is on my bucket list one day. All of the photos I have seen I could do some damage on both fabric and cross stitch patterns. Speaking of cross stitch, that La D Da one you completed is a great patriotic one. So glad you were able to spend some time at the lake. Those pics were wonderful too. Janice

Morning sweet Crow, hope this day finds you well….. I adore the gift Lauren sent, so thoughtful….. oh those lake photos, I love the lake so much. Such a beautiful spot your lake house is, I would never leave….. I’m so happy you were out to Country Sampler, what fun. Lovely stitchery’s and your Patriotic one is amazing, such talent…. Those fires and smoke are so bad here in Manitoba and other Provences, too bad hitting you also…. Cannot believe the 21st of July already, time just slipping by, still enjoying living here at camp, I hate the city….. Take care Robin, Blessings Francine.

Sounds like a dream of a time off and away. What a thoughtful framed gift from R&P and your sojourn at Country Sampler is enviable. Thank you for sharing those great finds. Was not aware of that piece of FLW history and wonder if sensitives visiting there sense its being haunted. So tragic. Time to catch your breath and settle back into a relaxing routine.

What beautiful country scenes. I don't have that here in SoCal so I enjoyed your visuals (the stitch ones too). Your banner made me chuckle. It's good to be busy. I read about Frank Lloyd Wright & what happened there. A book by T.C. Boyle. The book name escapes me but I found it interesting.
If nothing else, being away helps the heart to appreciate home sweet home.

Hmmm, "unsettled and moody"...that describes me some days! Your photos are lovely, really Robin they are...peaceful & calming, just what's needed in these frenetic days. I'd probably be hiding out at the lake on a more permanent basis! Good to socialize from time to time, although hmmm, I may be becoming a bit of a hermit these days - but that's another story!
Taliesin's history, oh my...did I block that out or just overlook it - how awful. I'll need to read up on it more. Not enough hours in the day to get everything done, but for today, I'll rest and plot and plan - I hope all's well and you're relaxing with your feet up, and yes, the required Sunday nap (as it should be!)

Lauren is such a thoughtful friend to gift you with this beautiful framed collage.
I love all the stitcheries but I doubt I could cross stitch with my bad vision. I need new glasses for sure.

Living by this beautiful lake, looks so peaceful. I would have a hard time to go back to home. Can you fish from that lake? Oh my gosh, you are being invaded by bunnies. I hope that they don't eat all your pretty flowers.

That get away to the Sampler Store with your sister in-law and friends sound delightful and the story of that historical murder sounds like something from a horror movie.
Take care, dear Robin. I hope that you are enjoying some time with Mia this summer. I bet that she growing fast.Hugs,
Julia

Good morning Robin - Loved visiting your blog today. In the back of my mind, I think I have heard of the tragedy at Taliesin...so sad and horrifying. The Country Sampler Store sounds wonderful - what lovely eye candy you tempted us with. I recently finished another design by La-D-Da and just may have to stitch up My Country as well. Thanks for sharing all the inspiring photos of nature and stitchin'! Have a blessed August.

How did I miss this wonderful post! I hope I'm not too late to say what a beautiful area that is. You know I'm not a hooker or a needle pointer but I sure love to look at the samplers. I always think of the magazine, Country Sampler, when I hear that name. Well, it's August and we've had cooler and less humid days for the beginning but the heat and humid air is heading our way. I'm not going to complain, just try and enjoy the last of the Summer days. I hope all is well with you and I'm glad you had the chance for an outing with family. Take care Robin!
