A few sights along the roads of Nod of late:
Some still believe that the sight of turkey vultures is an omen of impending death.
In the U.S., it is illegal to take, kill, or possess turkey vultures, their eggs, and any body parts - including their feathers.
Violations are punishable by fines of up to $100,000 for individuals ($200,000 for organizations) and/or up to one year in prison.
Sight 2:
I have no words for this, but it isn't everyday one sees a car burning on the side of the road - at least not in Nod. (Thankfully, no one was injured.)
Sight 3:
And then there's this:
Today it obviously isn't.
...Anyway, Happy October my friends.
Let the shenanigans and spooking begin in earnest.

I never knew that Turkey Vultures were protected. We have so many here in New England .
My neighbor's son in law bought a hybrid truck ....he smelled smoke while driving it, pulled off the road , grabbed his wallet & phone got out & it exploded in flames ! There was nothing the fire department could do , except watch it burn ...pretty shocking !!!
There have been sitings of cougars here too !!!
Your poor mailbox , wonder what did that ??? Even the animal kingdom is in turmoil ....
Turkey vultures do good work, just like...uh, black snakes, which don't bother me at all and glad to have them. There have been coyote sitings here but no cougars. OMG, I recently read where there was an EV which was on fire, doors locked and firemen couldn't get the passengers out. So sad!!
What a cute but now wounded mailbox. Guess someone is having target practice on it. Any kids in the neighborhood?
All birds of prey are protected I thought.
The bob cat is exciting. what happened to your mailbox? Was it a woodpecker or a person?
Cathy
We so rarely see dead birds,m so your turkey vulture must have been a sad shock.
The bobcat scent-marking was an unusual sight, but, oh, dear! your mailbox has suffered unjustly.
I did not know Turkey Vultures were protected. I saw one on the side of the road last month. When Tundra was a pup we had more around, so not sure what has happened to them in 5 years. Where I use to work they would hang out on the ledge of the second story window of my office. Folks would laugh at me when they walked by and saw them. EGAD on both the car fire and your mailbox. Janice
Only you would take pictures of the turkey vulture...lol!
We don't have bobcat, but the coyotes howling at night sound like they are right outside my bedroom. The train whistle really sets them off.
So what destroyed your mailbox? Any clues?
Impending shenanigans, bring it on :)
O.k. even for the land just over from Nod all that is crazy!
What a collection of sadness.....there must have been a
lovely flower of note blooming somewhere..... Here is hoping
the impendings don't materiialize........
I've seen that vulture several times, one is in a development and hangs out with a goose. Odd couple. Was Woody mad about a check not coming?
Morning Robin, hope all well in Nod…. Poor Turkey Vulture, they do a fine job cleaning up, guess was hit…. Love the sighting of the Bobcat, so beautiful, nice picture… and what the heck is with your cute mailbox, Piliated Woodpecker? … we just had a too hot weather week and I’m so done, I want cozy Fall temps which I think this week coming is giving me…. Take care, Francine.
Great picture of the bobcat marking its territory. I wonder if it's a female.
Sorry about that poor wild turkey. What ever killed it didn't eat it. I didn't know that they were protected. That is quite a wild hefty fine
regarding anyone found in possession of one or even it's feathers.
I wonder if a squirrel chewed your cute mailbox. They are just glorified rodents and so destructive. They'll chew anything, even hard walnut shells.
I hope that you have a wonderful October. We still have decent warm weather but it gets cold at night but no frost here yet. maybe it's because we are close to the river.
Take care, hugs.
Julia
Oh my goodness, as we say around here, some days are better than others - and what happened to the mailbox? What we usually have is a bunch of ne’er-do-wells under cover of darkness racing their car by while hanging out the window swinging a baseball bat. I guess they enjoy taking down or at least badly damaging mailboxes - Really? No better way to spend time? And part of me always hopes that they dislocated their shoulder swinging that bat! I take a fiendish delight in knowing they’re in excruciating pain and have to explain what happened when they go to the doctor! Sending wishes that this will be a much better week.
Interesting road trip in Nod! I just saw 2 turkey buzzards having lunch with a dead deer on the side of the road and I'm hoping impeding death means the deer and not me! I'm sorry about your cute mailbox. Surely, it's a crime to damage a federal container like a mailbox. I think they are more important than a turkey buzzard! We finally have rain today and cooler temps will arrive later today. Our colors haven't changed much due to the warm and the drought. Hopefully it will get better. I'll still enjoy my favorite month though! Have a good day Robin!
#1 Well I wonder what that TV (that's what we call them here) saw to impend it's death. Hmm.
#2 Burning electric vehicles (mostly Teslas and E-bikes) around here quite frequently. I worry for my crispy town as we could all go up from one of those things.
#3 Walking my "hood" a while ago. Lady pulls over and tells us "be careful there's a mountain lion down there". It was the neighborhood bobcat.
And last but not least. Attempted mail theft by woodpecker? A homeless something or other attempting a squat? I hope your mail was still there.
We have a lot of Vultures in our areas, more than usual. It looks like a woodpecker is trying to make a new home.
Can you take feathers if they're already dead?
You have some fabulous animals near you.
