T-14 Days...

...and counting.
Or not.

Fourteen days until our country's sesquicentennial.

Like everything else these days, it seems to have snuck up quickly.

Or is it just me?

I have no plans for the 4th and I'm not necessarily sad about that.
Most years, I have tried to spend the holiday at the lake.
However, given that one whole level of the house is uninhabitable (and said level contains the laundry area as well as the main closet where all manner of necessary things (batteries, toolbox, spare paper towel, etc.) are kept and said closet no longer exists), it's not going to happen this year.

It would have been nice to sneak one last holiday in up there with the kids before the new "little" arrives, but it is what it is. Besides, I am certain that the entire area will be a complete and utter zoo.
Even on normal years, fireworks (and other ruckusing) start many days ahead of the actual holiday and continue many days after (with essentially no break).

It is also extremely over-peopley.
In addition to the many resorts and cabin rentals, there are several "residences" in the area that have been built soley as rentals and they are overflowing with tourists.  And those people who are actually residents there most usually have their own parties...and guests.
Consequently, the lake is full of pontoons, speed boats pulling giant tubes, jets skis, water skiers, and the shores are full of other people's music and squealing children.
At dusk, the fireworks will begin and the adult parties and music kick in.

That's on a normal year. On this auspicious Independence Day (that just happens to land on a Saturday, go figure?) I don't care to know what it will be like.

In other words, it's no place for the likes of me.

So, instead, I have decided to "over-decorate" for the occasion and, since no one else will be seeing it, I thought I would share a few snippets of it with you.

{A few of my vintage and antique parade horns on the cabinet in the front entry.}

{Fresh peonies nestled in an old crock in the drysink...guarded by a vintage eagle cookie cutter and drinking straws.}

{An out-of-print Blackbird Designs pattern "Home of the Brave" stitched last year and finally fully finished atop the mantel.}

{Stitched on 40-ct "Old Linen" by xJu Designs}

{Top of the pie safe.}

{Poor photo, but this is an old child's/youth's woolen naval jacket, with greens and flag tucked in a very large gourd container}

There's more...perhaps I'll manage another post within the next couple of weeks and share more.

Among all the dressings and hoopla, however, there is one particular treasure.

{Teresa Kogut's "250th Celebration" with modifications}

Beautifully stitched and beautifully finished onto a little wood shaker box.

An amazing gift from a dear friend.

At a time when my spirit - and heart - desperately needed a lift, it arrived with a fanfare all its own...sweet handmade paper birds, wonderfully packaged...and some of the best chocolates I've ever had.
I intended to photograph the wrappings, paper birds, chocolates, etc. but the latter disappeared too quickly and missed the photo shoot...and then, of course, I felt guilty.

My heart will hold the joy this brought for many, many, seasons to come.
Thank you

Like you I'd not venture to the lake house either, for all the reasons you mentioned. Was blown away by the amount of antique patriotic decor but your special gift took my breath away. Beautiful work and lovely to look at all year long.

What a treasure that cross stitch is. Absolutely lovely...and the rest of your decorating is not too shabby ;-)
On a normal year here in northern Ohio, fireworks are shot off for days. I cannot begin to comprehend the money spent (wasted) on them. This year will be insane for sure, but I am so happy to live in the USA at this special time.
Happy birthday America!!!

Hi Robin, I‘ve never commented on here before but have read your blog for years. I have “over decorated” this year, too, for various reasons, and would love for you to share more of yours. I have an idea of who sent you the beautiful gift. How very generous and thoughtful of her. A real treasure! I truly enjoy every one of your posts and am sorry for everything you have to deal with. Have a good week! Cherie in WI

You decorations are amazing. I don't have much but lady liberty on the porch. No big plans here either. But the bikers are gone and it is sweet relief.

Oh good grief. They started fireworks here already. The older I get, the more I want to avoid celebrations. Any kind. I turned from a Vegas junket rat to a slug over the years. Love your decor as always. And ... over-peopley made my day.

You “over decorate” very tastefully. It’s all so pretty . Your particular treasure is beautiful as is I imagine the friend who made it for you. I hope your spirit stays lifted!

Your lake house will be what our river will be like with all of the boats out there too. The freighters will be blowing their horns as always on weekends when the boat patrol goes out thinking they own the whole river. A freighter cannot stop on a dime...but these idiots think they can. Your Americana decor is simply wonderful. Am loving it all. I also think I spotted a Chessie and Me stitch piece, but I could have been wrong. Any hoot so glad you decorated for this memorable birthday we are having. I have yet to show my patriotic decor. Guess I better put out a post myself. Janice

I love all the patriotic decorations! Congrats on another "little!" I don't feel like as much attention has been given to this 250th as there was at the 200th. I was in grade school, the world was simple, so that could be it. Still, tho....not too much "hoopla" about it. However, I have stopped watching regular tv and don't listen to any radio (WGNV only). I say all that to say, I'll probably watch parade in Antigo, it's a tradition. However, due to construction, they changed parade route, so not sure where we will sit. I'm an extrovert and the "world" is even to "peopley" for me. Hahah Nice gift.

I love seeing your treasures and all of the goodies you have. I am so sorry about your lake house. I am excited though about your new arrival. Yes, I used to enjoy the fourth of July so much. Now, my goodness, it is completely out of control here. The explosions rock my house. They have already started. I keep trying to figure out where I could go but I am not coming up with anything.
I hope you have a lovely week.

Afternoon Robin, here we are into sweet summertime…. I like you don’t like all the hoopla of the holiday, here July 1st is Canada Day… We will be at camp but in a more quiet area thank goodness…. I hope you get to the lake house in the near future to enjoy bits of summer…. I love your patriotic antique items, I think your collections of what you have are the very best, I enjoy when you share all your collections with us for the different holidays and seasons….. well the bear seems to have moved on, yay.. We spend all our time here in summer at camp as I love it here, head home to appointments, laundry, then right back….. Wishing you a happy summer, big hugs, Francine.

I completely agree — I love to see the fireworks, but the hoopla and mayhem and noise is just too much - does that mean I’m getting old?! Your decorations are beautiful - show more if you can, I could use the inspiration. It doesn’t matter if no one else sees them it’s all for you, and that’s absolutely fine. There are times that I do things and I think no one else will ever notice, but that’s OK, it makes me happy. And if you need to get away, pack up the Nomad with some wonderful picnic food, blankets, and sparklers, and go create your own fabulous 4th! Heck, just park it in the backyard and enjoy every minute! (So jealous!)

I do hope you have a peaceful fourth. A quiet celebration. I adore the little stitched box, so beautifully made with love.

Thank you Nancy. It meant the world to me...and will for years to come. Happy Fourth to you as well!

Thank you so very much Cherie. I'm honored that you visit and have been a long-time follower. I've see and read your comments on "other" blogs that we both follow. I would love to see your decorations for the holiday. Do you have a blog? I've tried finding you before but have not been successful. And, yes....I'm pretty sure your idea of who sent the gift is spot-on...she is, indeed, a treasure.

You have the sweetest things to decorate your home for the 4th! Our area had the annual Ballon festival. Weather is always an issue but they managed to fly a couple of times and have all the hoopla last week. We don't venture there! We'll have a quiet, hot 4th here. This week will bring super hot and humid days. Ill be the one looking forward to fall! Take care Robin!
