Changes

{Heron playing hide-and-seek}

Although it's been a while since I last posted (as usual), I'm certain most of you remember me saying in my post before last that I would not be going to the lake over the holiday weekend and was not sad about it.

Well, yeah...that changed.
At the 11th hour (a biblical reference, believe it or not), the replacement flooring finally came in, and, in a stroke of luck, the flooring contractors managed to fit the project in within days.
I still had no intention of going, however, because the place was still in shambles - boxes everywhere, the toilet still in the bedroom, the vanity still under the stairs, and the contents of the closets (not to mention the pieces of what once the closet) who knew where.

But my son and daughter-in-law started making noises about going up, and because it would likely be the last time in a long time that they'd be able to go (Baby No. 2 expected any day), plans changed.
I contacted the contractors who had done the original work, and they moved mountains to get most of the things put back into place (i.e., the toilet and vanity back in the bathroom, rebuilt the closet, rehung doors, etc.) Yes, there was work to be done...and heavens knows, a LOT of cleaning, but it would, at least, be habitable.

On the day before I intended to leave, I went grocery shopping (did I mention the nearest town is SWAMPED with tourists and traffic on holidays?).  I was nearly finished when my DIL messaged me and told me they were not coming after all...or, if they came, it would only be for a day.
😖

I decided to go up by myself regardless since I knew I should check on things and that there would be more than a weekend's worth of cleaning and sorting, sorting and cleaning, to do.
(And, after all, I had a ton of groceries since I could not bring myself to put everything in my cart back on the shelves.)

It was good that I went but little cleaning was accomplished.  (Another long tale - this one of having purchased 3 floor cleaners...the first of which was defective; the second of which was stolen by one of my husband's "invitees" before I had even opened the box it came in; and the third of which (which was used one time and one time only) was, it turned out, missing a very indispensable part when I attempted to use it this time - a fact I only realized after spending several hours with the online manual and YouTube videos, and digging in every possible remaining box and caddy searching for said part.
Apparently, the "water mitigation team" (a term used ever so loosely) must have "disposed" of it while doing their demolition "mitigating."
Grrrr....

So that "plan" changed as well.

It was beautiful nonetheless...noise notwithstanding.
The forecast had been for storms and rain, but there was nothing other than a brief shower.

The swans were initially elusive They are recluses, I think, like me, but they showed themselves after the interlopers tourists left and things quieted. They had changes to reveal as well:

Two little cygnets (such a strange word, in my opinion, for a baby swan), although the second one is mostly hidden by the reeds in the photo.

I enjoyed the peace after the days of fireworks and firecrackers and, despite not having the magical part for my floor cleaner, did manage to get some things accomplished.

As I was preparing things to go back to Nod, however, there was the sound of a horrendous explosion. It was louder than any of the fireworks in the past many days...and much, much, closer.

Have you ever seen those cats in the animated cartoons that shoot straight up in the air when there is a loud sound/bang?
That's EXACTLY what happened with my two cats...despite having been conditioned over the weekend to the noise and sounds of the fireworks they went straight up and scrabbled to hid under the nearest bed.

I ever so tentatively walked around the property in an attempt to determine the source of the noise fully expecting to find something smoking.

What I saw was the old tree that my eagles favored as a roost had snapped in half...

...and one half had landed on my (metal) dock.

So, another change.
(...and yet another thing to deal with.)

Did I mention that the weather at the lake was beautiful? So much better than predicted??

Well, that, too, changed once I returned to Nod.
I awoke a few days after returning to the smell of smoke.
Like the idiot who ran around the lake house trying to find the source of the "explosion," I was now running around the house here in Nod trying to determine what, exactly, had caught on fire.

This was my view...but nothing was on fire.

It was the smoke from the Canadian...and Minnesotan...wildfires.

We have been on the top of the AQI air quality scale (the maroon/hazardous range) for over a week now.

The smoke has seeped in everywhere despite closed windows and doors and a/c.
I had an appointment at the medical center and thought that that building, at least, would be smokefree.

No such luck. Even the examining rooms in the far recesses of the building were smoky.  Virtually all outdoor activities and events were cancelled.

By mid-morning, my eyes are so dry and irritated that I wish I could scratch them out. By the afternoon, not only are my eyes suffering, but my head is pounding and breathing gets difficult.

We had a day and a half of somewhat a reprieve but then the winds shifted again and brought more smoke, and we are still under a hazardous air quality alert.

It's unfortunate that this can look beautiful.

Another change:
The day after tomorrow, this little girl's entire world will change: She will become a big sister.

You may remember that she came very, very, early and things were scary for a long while. Thankfully, she has grown and thrived.

Her mother (and the rest of us) had hoped the second child could be delivered normally (vs. caesarean) given the pain and long recovery time she endured the first time around.
Unfortunately, that's not to be and while one child came out "under-done," this one is turning out to be "over-done."
A decision has been made that, for the safety of mother and child, the child be delivered sooner rather than later via caesarean.

Prayers for a safe delivery for both mother and child would be most welcome if you're so inclined.

Oh, and for me...Gigi duty is going to test me this week as we're embarking on very new territory.
This one has never spent a night alone without one of her parents present.

Everything is happening in your world. I'm glad there was at least some peace and tranquillity eventually at the lake.
I do remember your granddaughter's early arrival and am pleased there have been no lasting ill-effects.
I hope the new baby arrives/has arrived safely and that you are not bowing under the strain of a temporarily parentless child. I'm sure she's having a wonderful time, and you can sleep later.
I remember so well the shock to the system of looking after small children following years of not doing so. Enjoy. They grow up so fast.

OMG Robin...the word change is an overstatement for you. Seems like the proverbial black cloud still remains over you. Have fun with Mia. Cannot believe how big she is getting already. We had our bedroom windows opened last night and forgot about the smoke. EGAD we forgot about the smoke and I was choking in the middle of the night and had to spray some air freshener. Day 6 and we still have that darn smoke....our area looks like your pics too. I wish we had the Trumpeter Swans here instead of the Mute ones. Prayers for your DIL that new baby arrives safe and well. Janice

That was a roller coaster ride that has lasted a little too long for you! I admire you very much for still finding beauty in the nature around you. The smoke paid us a visit here in Ohio . It wasn’t as heavy as yours right here but this was the first time it was bad enough that I could smell and taste it. So scary for people with breathing problems. I will be praying for your DIL, son, Mia and little one. Yes Mia is in for some big changes but it feels like the love that surrounds her will get her through. You got this Gigi!!!

Wow! We are among the Interlopers too. Sorry about the tree and the clean up needed for that. But glad the lake house got some much needed repairs done for you.
The very best wishes for the new mom and baby. Enjoy your time with your sweet girl. And congrats on being a gigi again.

You've certainly been on a roller coaster lately. Hope all goes well with daughter & baby, and you with being on full-time Gigi duty for a whole week. Just the thought of having to do that with my 4 year old GD wears me out, can't imagine actually doing it.

I always enjoy reading about the goings on in your life and the land of Nod. I will pray for your family and new baby. I am in North Carolina. I had a chance minute. So it was nice to read your blog.

Things will be fine...keep the faith! And where there was one, there will now

It was a wild ride for me just reading your blog, lol. I can barely manage caring for one home and you have two to deal with. Mia looks like a little princess every time I see a photo of her. Me at that age was in shorts, some sort of top and dirty knees, lol.

Never a dull moment in your life…and if there was…you could still make it sound heavenly. You have such a gift.
We had several days of hazardous air quality and low visibility. Thankfully it has gotten better.
Good luck with Gigi duty. Miss Mia is in for a rude awakening I betcha. Her world will be turned upside down for a while 🙃. Good luck to dil and son…and good luck to Gigi 😉

My dear girl what a terrible time you’ve been having again. Let this last episode be an end to it all. You should have a word with the Goddess and respectfully inform her that you have had enough, thank you. I really hope all goes well for your DIL and the new babe. A new life is such a joy.

Dear GIgi - by now, the little one should be here and I hope you’re having the time of your life! A sweet little newborn and a darling Big Sister! I hope mom is feeling well and dad is giving her all the TLC that she so deserves. (If I was there I’d bring dinner - wink, wink) i’m glad the flooring came. It’s some things are getting sorted, but the tree falling, the smoke, the endless frustration - and oh the cleaner - Seriously, before you’d ever opened the box?! I’ve changed as I’ve gotten older, I’d be throwing a screaming hissy fit over that. I do hope, since you had plenty of groceries, you were able to put your feet up and enjoy the beautiful scenery, take some time for yourself, and oh my - those beautiful swans. Take care of YOU!

Holy Smokes Robin! I don't mean that lightly as we were also in the haze from Canada. But it's lovely today and fall like temps...in the 50's this AM! I'm so sorry all the mess and crazy changes have happened to you and I sure hope your new grandkiddo is doing well and your Gigi duties are also going good! We have another great grandkiddo arriving next month. 2 for this year is crazy! How did time go so fast? Oh well, that's life! It's been a weird summer here with my weird health issues. I may have to have some heart surgery that hopefully will be not a complicated mess. Sometimes I just want to quit feeling like I'm the health care systems science project. Anyway, have a good rest of this week and great weekend! Hugs from Ohio my friend!

Oh, my word, what an absolute emotional and logistical rollercoaster! Can we first just talk about the curse of the floor cleaners? That reads like a dark comedy script. A defective one, a stolen one, and a water mitigation team throwing away the vital part of the third? The universe was fundamentally conspiring against you having clean floors that weekend. Then to top it all off at the lake, having your eagles' favorite roost tree snap in half and crash right onto the metal dock? Talk about insult to injury. At least those little cygnets gave you a fleeting moment of peace before the property decided to fall apart around you.

Coming home only to be trapped in that apocalyptic wildfire haze sounds completely miserable. When the smoke is seeping into the far recesses of a medical exam room, you know it’s bad. My eyes and lungs are aching just reading about your AQI levels, please stay locked up tight with those air filters running at maximum speed.

Sending up all the best thoughts, love, and prayers for your daughter and the new baby's arrival. Knowing a C-section is necessary brings a whole different kind of stress with the recovery, but thank goodness doctors can step in to keep both mom and baby safe and sound.

As for "Gigi duty" with the big sister... oh honey, buckle up! That first overnight without her parents is going to be a high-stakes adventure for both of you. Keep your patience close and a lot of distractions ready.

How is everyone holding up with the big arrival and the start of Gigi duty?
